Forest Protection Project in Ratanakiri province, Cambodia

As part of the Forest Protection Project in Ratanakiri province, Cambodia, our team facilitated a series of Focus Group Discussions with villagers, local authorities, and relevant stakeholders. These sessions served as a platform for community members to openly share their perspectives on forest use, resource management, and prevailing environmental threats such as illegal logging and land conversion.
Participants emphasized the critical role that forests play in their daily lives—not only as a source of food, medicine, and materials, but also as a foundation for cultural traditions and community identity. The discussions revealed concerns about diminishing forest cover, loss of biodiversity, and the long-term effects on livelihoods if these trends continue.
Stakeholders collaboratively identified key needs, including:
Strengthening community forest management structures
Enhancing local capacity for monitoring and enforcement
Increasing awareness and education around sustainable practices
Securing legal recognition and rights for community-managed forests
By engaging all voices, the project aims to build a shared sense of responsibility and ownership over forest resources. These insights are instrumental in shaping targeted interventions that not only protect the environment but also promote social and economic resilience for the community.
